Although David Prowse's physical performance as Darth Vader is fantastic, had Prowse's original voice been used in Star Wars, Vader would not have a fraction of the gravitas he does with Jones'.Īlthough James Earl Jones has retired from voicing Vader, this does not mean that Darth Vader cannot appear, alongside his iconic, original voice, in future Star Wars projects. Prowse's West Country accent earned him the nickname "Darth Farmer" from fans. Prowse did not provide Vader's voice that was James Earl Jones but his muscular 6-foot-6 frame became the embodiment of one of the great movie villains. George Lucas clearly knew this when he brought in Jones to dub over David Prowse's voice in the original Star Wars. Without James Earl Jones' voice, Darth Vader would be a shadow of the character he is. DARTH VADER David Prowse is a 6 6, 266-pound former heavyweight. It's this voice that gives Darth Vader his authoritative, and terrifying at times, presence, alongside his towering height. James Earl Jones' distorted breathing alone proved that he could make Darth Vader a scary and imposing force without him even being seen onscreen. Jones was one of the few people – rumored to be only three or four in the Star Wars movie cast – who knew the big twist. While David Prowse brought the physical aspects of the character, such as his imposing six-foot-seven height, it was James Earl Jones' voice that made Darth Vader the powerful, iconic villain he is. James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader and his lines were very different from the ones in the script. While Prowse was the actor who portrayed Darth Vader in the movie, he did not voice the character. Luke screamed “No,” and the script continued: It then had him reach out to Luke in place of the line “I am your father.” I will complete your training and we will rule the Empire as equals.” The Emperor is strong with The Force – but The Force runs strong in the Skywalker line and together we will overthrow him. Here is a look at what Prowse’s script said: In an unfortunate bit of foreshadowing, the first couple of Green Cross Code Man films saw the actor. That script is up for auction and it includes the page that showed what he read when he was acting in this iconic scene. Prowse, unfortunately, wasn’t able to lecture them in his own voice, at least to begin with. Prowse, who died last year, had a personal copy of his The Empire Strikes Back script. Only two or three people knew this twist, and David Prowse, the man who portrayed Darth Vader was not one of them.
